BRAVE EAGLE WAS RUNNING for his life toward the protection of the forest. He had removed the hobbles from two of the horses but was struggling with the third when the shot from one of the white men’s weapons shattered the silence of the night. Even the two loose horses ran across the meadow as shot echoed through the canyon.
Brave Eagle heard another shot from behind him, and the heavy lead ball tore into the white bark of an aspen only a couple of feet from his head. Wood splinters flew from the tree so violently that two of them stuck in his face and neck. He stumbled and fell as he tried to duck away from the painful splinters. Brave Eagle was fast on his feet, and although he did not realize it, that fall had saved his life. Another lead ball from Willy’s rifle would have hit him squarely in the back if he had not fallen at the same instant Willy fired.
Brave Eagle was not quite so lucky a moment later when both Clem and Gabe fired at the same time. One of their lead balls tore through Brave Eagle’s lower left arm. The fleeing young Arapaho dropped his bow as the force of the shot spun him around, but with another shot of adrenalin pumping through him, the young warrior disappeared into the dark forest. None of these men were willing to follow him into the unknown darkness.
The captain stood above the dead Indian and his own man. Although Joe Meacham may not have been the best of them, nevertheless, he was one of them. Alex believed he had died from his own ineptness, but that did not change the fact he was killed by a savage. His eyes shifted to the young dead Indian, and he said out loud, although no one was near, “That was a mighty high price to pay for a scalp.”
Alex carefully pried the gruesome scalp from the rapidly stiffening hand of the young Indian. These men still did not know from which tribe they were from, and to them, it did not matter. Clem was excited after the fight, claiming he had at least wounded one of them. In his mind, a lot more payback was necessary before the slate was washed clean for the deaths of three of his friends now.
Gabe did not say anything, but he believed Clem thought of their three dead as better friends now they were dead than he had when they were alive. He figured Clem believed he had just cause to go on a killing spree. Gabe believed that killing spree was coming, and he only hoped he, Alex, Willy, and Billy would be far enough away when it happened that they would not be dragged into it.
